Other

Parma (170.000 inhabitants), city of art and culture, is an important city in Emilia Romagna region. Of Etruscan origin, it later became a flourishing Roman colony, owing to its natural wealth as well as to its strategic position. Throughout the Middle Ages, it partook in battles and invasions, always managing to keep a leading role, to which both the wonderful Romanesque art landmarks of the Cathedral (XII century) and of the Baptistere (XIII century) bear witness. When it became independent under the governement of the Farnese dynasty, the city was enriched by precious architectural and historical landmarks that contributed to creating an itinerary of unique charm all along through the old town centre streets.

Apart from the Cathedral and Baptistere the main monuments to visit are: the Renaissance church of Saint John, with beautiful Correggio frescoes the Baroque "Steccata" church. with its overwhelming interior, and the works of  Parmigianino, the majestic Pilotta hosting the impressive Farnese Theatre and National Gallery, where historical findings and important artworks are kept, the beautiful Ducal Park, with the Ducal Palace, once the summer mansion of Maria Luigia (Napoleon's wife) and now prestigious headquarters of the "European Authority for Food Security", the neoclassic Regio Theatre, one of the leading Opera Houses in the world. The surrounding countryside offers the opportunity to visit a lot of impressive Middle Age castles such as: Fontanellato, Soragna, Bardi, Montechiarugolo, San Secondo, Torrechiara and many others.

Keeper of a glorious past and bound to tradition, Parma is a open to innovation and progress and is highly productive in several industrial fields. It is very strong especially in the food domain, where the agricultural traditions are combined with the transformation processes of several surrounding industries. Parmesan cheese, Parma ham, culatello of Zibello, salame of Felino, mushrooms of Valtaro, wines of the Colli di Parma, black truffles of Fragno are all part of a high-quality wine and food culture. That's why Parma has been chosen as the headquarters of the "European Authority for food security", created by the European Community.

Because of this combination of art, culture, tradition, history and technical innovation Parma is the ideal city to host one of the most important exhibition centres in Italy and Europe.
