On the opposite coast of the Gulf lies Porto Venere, so named from the latin "Portus Veneris" due to the beauty of the location, with its particular brightly coloured houses that seem to cascade down the cliffs towards the Isola Palmaria, an area that has recently been made a protected nature reserve. Dominating all of this is the charming San Pietro Church that looks over the sea towards the Park of the Cinque Terre, Rimmaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso.
